Eugenia stood beside Andrew, chewing the inside of her cheek as they watched the carriage drive the horses around a bend in the road and disappear. The driver had left them alone, the heartless lout. Worse, Andrew had refused to climb aboard the carriage and continue on to Wick.

She might loathe the MacGalloways and desperately want to proceed with her plan, but Andrew had been shot. He had been wounded because of her and she wasn’t about to leave him bleeding on the road. Who knew how badly he’d been hurt? The Highlander needed to be tended by a doctor.

Goodness, during the wars she had read reports of more than one soldier succumbing to a so-called flesh wound which had developed all sorts of complications. One she recalled quite clearly had reported that a man had bled to death in his sleep. Another’s wound had turned putrid causing the need for the removal of the limb and the poor man died during surgery.

Of course, Tommy assumed he was protecting her. If only Mrs. Hay would have insisted her son stow the weapon with the luggage, this never would have happened.

“We’d best go,” said Andrew, his voice edged with pain. “I reckon ’tis only a couple of miles until we reach the coast. From there, the ride to Stack Castle ought to only take two or three hours. Interestingly, by the time we arrive at the gates, we will have executed a perfect triangle.”

Regardless of if the mail coach took her miles out of her way, it had been the only viable option for her escape. “I am not returning to Stack Castle.” She pointed to the blood seeping from the bandage fashioned from the driver’s neckcloth now dripping onto the dirt. “You need to be seen by a physician, and I’d imagine the closest one is in Wick.”

He stretched the wing, the movement bringing a grimace. “The shot only grazed my arm.”

“Is that why you’re still bleeding like you’ve been sliced by a dagger?”

Andrew reached for the horse’s reins and pulled the gelding away from the succulent grass growing alongside the dirt road. “I ken you were upset with Philip as well as me. I realize now that our behavior was unforgivable and, for my part, I am immensely sorry. But to pick up and leave without your mother and sister, setting out on your own is madness.”

“Oh, you would say that,” Eugenia spat with a sharp edge to her voice. “You’re a man. And an arrogant one at that.”

“I beg your pardon? What were you thinking when you left the castle alone? You could have been—could still be ruined.”

“Do you not believe me to possess the intelligence to understand the precariousness of my actions? I told my mother to inform everyone I’d fallen off a cliff for a reason.”

“Which was what, exactly?”

Oh, no, she wasn’t going to divulge the details of her plan, lest Mama send someone to ruin everything before it began. “I do not intend on ever returning to that life.
